The Ehsaas Program is now run under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), and 8171 is the official service for checking whether your household qualifies for its cash payments. You can check free by SMS or on the web portal in under a minute. This page covers all three check methods, what each reply means, and what to do if you are not registered yet. For payment amounts and the full eligibility rules, see our BISP Kafaalat guide.
What Is 8171?
8171 is two things with one name: the official SMS short code, and the official web portal at 8171.bisp.gov.pk. BISP runs both. They read your household record from the National Socio-Economic Registry (NSER), the national survey database, and show whether you qualify.
Two things 8171 does not do: it does not register new families, and it does not release payments. It only reports your current status. NADRA’s role in the system is your CNIC record itself, which is why your NADRA details, such as marital status, must be correct before a survey.
8171 Check by SMS (No Internet Needed)
- Open the messaging app on any mobile phone.
- Type your 13-digit CNIC number, with no dashes and no spaces.
- Send it to 8171.
- You will receive a reply SMS with your eligibility status.
The service is free on all networks. Only trust the reply that comes from 8171 itself.
8171 Web Portal Check Online
- Open 8171.bisp.gov.pk in your browser. Check the address carefully, because fake copies of this portal exist.
- Enter your 13-digit CNIC number.
- Type the captcha code shown in the picture.
- Submit, and your status appears on screen.
The portal shows more detail than the SMS, including whether a survey is needed. Never enter your CNIC on any other website that claims to check it, including this one: PakGovtSchemes.pk does not collect CNIC numbers.
What Your 8171 Result Means
| Result | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible, payment ready | Your household qualifies and an instalment is due | Collect your payment through the channel BISP announces, with the woman beneficiary’s CNIC and biometric verification |
| Registered, no payment due | You are in the system but no instalment is currently released for you | Wait for the next quarterly cycle and check again |
| Not eligible | Your last survey score was above the PMT cut-off of 32 (37 with a disabled member) | If your circumstances have changed, ask for a survey update at the BISP tehsil office |
| No record / survey required | Your household has not been surveyed, or the record is outdated | Visit the Benazir registration desk at your tehsil office for the free NSER survey |
Checking Whether Your Payment Has Arrived
The same 8171 check also tells you about payments. When a quarterly instalment is released for your household, the SMS reply and the portal result change to show that a payment is due. If the reply says you are eligible but shows no payment, the instalment phase for your district has most likely not opened yet: BISP releases payments in phases, district by district, over several days.
- Recheck after a few days before assuming something is wrong.
- Trust only the reply from 8171 itself, not screenshots or messages shared on social media or by agents.
- If your neighbours have been paid and your eligible status still shows no payment after the phase completes, ask at your BISP tehsil office with your CNIC.
Keep Your Record Active: The Three-Year Re-Survey
BISP reassesses households every three years, so an old survey can quietly expire. When that happens, the 8171 result starts showing that a survey is required, and payments can pause until the record is refreshed. Life changes matter too: a marriage, a birth, a death in the family, or a big change in income should be updated at the Benazir registration desk of your tehsil office, because your PMT score is calculated from this record. Keeping your NADRA details current, especially marital status, widow status and disability, makes both the survey and the 8171 result accurate.
Not Registered? How Registration Actually Works
Checking and registering are different steps. If 8171 shows no record, registration happens in person through the NSER survey at your BISP tehsil office, not online. Before you go, make sure your NADRA record is up to date, including marital status, widow status and any disability, because the survey uses it. Our BISP page lists the documents to take and the survey steps in full.
8171 Fraud Warnings
- Messages about BISP come only from 8171. A message from any other number is fraudulent.
- Fake 8171 websites copy the official portal to steal CNIC numbers. Only use 8171.bisp.gov.pk.
- Checking, surveying and registering are all free. Anyone charging for them is a scammer.
- Never share your mobile PIN or bank details with anyone claiming to release your payment.
Ehsaas Program 8171: FAQs
Yes, for cash assistance. Ehsaas was the umbrella programme launched in 2019, and its payments are now managed under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). The 8171 service checks eligibility for the BISP payments, including Benazir Kafaalaat.
Yes. Checking by SMS to 8171 and on the official portal 8171.bisp.gov.pk is completely free, and so are the NSER survey and registration.
No. There is no online registration form. New families are registered through the free NSER survey at the Benazir registration desk in a BISP tehsil office. The 8171 portal only checks status.
It means your household has not been surveyed yet, or its survey record is outdated. Visit your BISP tehsil office for the free NSER survey, and make sure your NADRA record is correct first.
Only 8171. BISP has warned beneficiaries that messages from any other number should not be trusted.
Renew your CNIC at NADRA first. An expired or blocked CNIC can stop both the survey and your payments, because your identity is verified against the NADRA record.
